Deluxe is a very versatile romaine variety. It has shown very high tolerance to tip-burn and fringe- burn under extremely high temperatures. It has excellent bolting tolerance and is bushy stunt resistant. Deluxe has a medium-dark glossy green plant color with a yellow interior and has an excellent thick leaf texture, which gives it a strong shipping quality. Deluxe has smooth solid midribs and smooth leaf petioles. This variety has an added weight compared to most romaine types. Heart maturity is earlier than that of Solid King. Deluxe may be used for fresh, hearts, and/or processor markets with exceptional quality with added weight. This variety can be compared to the following lines, Valley Heart, Duquesne, Abilene, Grackle, Momentous, Solid King, and River RD.
Borrego is a romaine variety that offers several notable characteristics. Borrego exhibits medium bolting tolerance and is bushy stunt resistant. This variety features a dark-green plant color with a yellow interior and has an excellent thick leaf texture, contributing to its strong shipping quality. This variety also presents smooth, solid midribs and smooth leaf petioles with good fringe burn tolerance. Additionally, Borrego offers added weight compared to most other romaine types, and its heart maturity is medium. Borrego is suitable for both hearts and fresh markets, providing exceptional quality and increased weight. Borrego can be compared to the following lines: Holbrook, Arroyo, Boronda, Momentous, Cardinal,Duquesne, and River RD. *Recommendations: 9 - 10” spacing, Crop rotation advised.
Big Star is a green leaf variety with a medium to large frame and an
impressive butt and midrib appearance. Big Star also possesses a strong
Bolting and Tip-Burn resistance under extremely warm temperatures with long
day lengths. it is very pliable at harvest while exhibiting non-heading abilities
with extremely dark green plant color. Its strong holding abilities past harvest
stage will improve its leaf count while maintaining product quality and weight.
Daisy is our new main season Romaine. This new romaine line has excellent bolting tolerance and is resistant to bushy stunt virus. Daisy displays a very high tolerance to tip-burn and fringe-burn under extremely high temperatures. Daisy has a medium-glossy light-green plant color with a yellow interior and thick leaf texture, which gives it a strong shipping quality. It possesses a smooth solid midrib and smooth leaf petioles and has a good weight at harvest time. Daisy may be used for fresh, whole leaf, and/or processor markets with exceptional quality with added weight. This variety can be compared toDuquesne, Grackle, Solid King, and River RD.
Sunland is a new romaine variety that is both Corky Root and
Tomato Bushy Stunt Virus Resistant. This new variety exhibits strong
bolting tolerance and strong resistance to low & high temperature
abnormalities. Sunland has a large frame with a medium green color
and plant height is 12 to 13 inches with a thick & wide leaf surface. It
has an excellent thick smooth tapered midrib and has exceptional
weight at harvest. Sunland has a medium tolerance to Tip Burn and can
be used for Fresh, Processor and Heart markets. *Recommendation:
Sunland does best in fields with proper rotation.
Sidewinder is a large Vanguard type with exceptional leaf texture for
Desert Fall plantings. It has excellent head coverage giving it a high tolerance
to Sun Scald. Sidewinder also has high tolerance to Interior Tip-Burn. It has
along dark green cap leaf, round head shape, and impressive butt appearance.
Heads are bigger and heavier than Raider and Sundevil with higher yields
making it ideal for wrap lettuce, processor and naked pack.
Valencia is a new romaine variety that is both Corky Root and
Tomato Bushy Stunt Virus resistant. This variety has a medium tolerance to
Tip-Burn and Sclerotinia, making Valencia and excellent variety for fresh
and heart market plantings. Valencia has a beautiful medium green color
and exhibits excellent interior texture for strong quality and shipping.
Valencia displays smooth leaf petioles giving it an impressive appearance
during harvest time. Valencia is medium in height yet heavy in weight
compared to Green Forest, Green Towers, and Arroyo in their prospective
slots.
Fort Romie is our new romaine for warm weather. It has a medium-
strong bolting resistance and medium tolerance to Tip Burn. It has a medium
green color and exhibits a large frame with a 12” to 14” plant height. This
romaine has an extremely smooth midrib and wide leaf petiole with a straight
tapered butt shape making for an impressive pack at harvest. This variety is
Corky Root and TBS resistant and has shown tolerance to Fusarium. Fort Romie
is great for Fresh, Bulk, and Heart markets.
Diamondback is a sister line of Buccaneer and demonstrates the same
phone characteristics as Buccaneer. The frame and head size is slightly larger
than Buccaneer and can be planted four to seven days later going into the late
fall plantings. Diamondback also demonstrates strong Tip-Burn tolerance with
an excellent round head shape.
Superstar is a non-heading, green leaf lettuce variety with a large frame and impressive butt and midrib appearance. It is bushy stunt virus resistant with good tolerance to tip burn and has tolerance to fusarium. Superstar has an abundance of leaves that are slightly narrower than those of other green leaf varieties, making it ideal for the whole leaf market. Unlike other green-leaf varieties, Superstar is very pliable at harvest with less mechanical damage than other green-leaf varieties, making it suitable for fresh and whole-leaf markets. Compare Superstar against commercial lines Bergam’s Green, Cielo Verde, Starstruck, and Big Star.
River RD. is a new romaine with Tomato Bushy Stunt resistance. River RD
has slightly better Downy Mildew tolerance compared to Green Forest. Weight
is heavy with a thick leaf texture. This variety makes for an impressive pack for
fresh and heart markets also has excellent weight for processor market. Plant
River RD against the following competitive varieties, Rio Bravo, Green Thunder,
Zuma, Mando, and True Heart.
